Waters in the Park Comments
Last Update Saturday, July 19, 2008
Yellowstone River Salmon Flies, Golden Stones, Yellow Sallies, PMD's and Caddis. The upper end in the park opened earlier this week and the fishing has turned out to be pretty good despite the lower fish numbers.
FIre Hole PMD's and Caddis. The fishing has been pretty good all in all, but water temps are starting to rise.
Gibbon In good shape finally, with PMD's and Caddis present morning and evenings.
Madison Still a bit high, but visibility is good. Steady caddis activity the last couple hours of the day and the fish are on them.
Soda Butte

Still high and off-color.

Lamar High and off-color.
Slough Creek High, but clear and fishable. Good numbers of Drakes, PMD's and evening caddis.
Gardiner High, but very fishable with Salmon Flies and Golden Stones moving through.
General Park Comments We are still trying to put run-off behind us, but it is still hanging on. The west side of park is still providing the best options for fishable waterat the moment, but the northeast streams are starting to come into form. For those willing to hike, we have had real good reports coming in from people chasing Salmon Flies on the Yellowstone in the canyon.

Comments It is starting to turn on, but the river is still really high and off-color. Wade with caution, as it is hard to see what you're doing and the current is swift.

Comments Summer rates are now in effect. There has been good surface activity with PMD's and Sulphurs over the past week. Try small nymphs and midge pupa if nothing is occurring on the surface. The light-bodied mayflies are in full swing now, and they always provide some of the best fishing of the year.

Comments The lower Madison is still a good option right now. Traffic has lightened up considerably with the upper river now in fishable shape. Still plenty of hatch activity and steady catching. Double nymph rigs under a bobber or a bugger, sculpin or a crawfish in tandem with a beadhead dropper have been pretty effective. The upper river has really turned on , with most people intent on chasing Salmon Flies. They have moved up into the wade section now and are still present in good numbers. For those that don't have the fever, the fishing is still real good away from the salmon flies and the traffic is more agreeable as well. Double nymph rigs are providing the most steady action, but for those that like to fish dry flies, plenty of fish are working the surface.

Comments It has cleared over the past week, but still has a tinge of color. The fishing is starting to turn on, but current flows have proven this one to be tough on the wading angler. Pick your spots carefully and focus on the pocket water and the broken water of riffle corners to find fish.
